UK government launches review on zero emission driving by 2035

The UK government has launched a formal review into how the country will reach its goal of zero emission driving by 2035, and members of the public have until 23 October 2026 to submit their views as part of the consultation process.

The review centres on the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, which sets out rules requiring car manufacturers to sell a rising proportion of zero emission vehicles each year. The Department for Transport is now asking drivers, industry and other interested parties to contribute to shaping the path towards that 2035 target, meaning ordinary motorists have a genuine opportunity to influence how the policy develops.

For everyday drivers, the consultation is relevant whether you currently own a petrol or diesel car, are thinking about switching to an electric vehicle, or are concerned about the cost and practicality of doing so.
