New BMW M350 xDrive prototype spotted with 443 hp and drift mode

BMW is in the final stages of developing its next 3 Series, and the range-topping M350 xDrive variant has now been seen in prototype form, with multiple reports confirming key details about its power output, drivetrain and chassis technology.

The M350 xDrive will produce 443 hp, according to multiple reports, placing it firmly at the performance end of the saloon market. It will use mild-hybrid engines rather than a fully electric or plug-in setup, meaning drivers will still fill up at a petrol station but benefit from a degree of electrified assistance that can improve efficiency and response.

One of the more notable features is a dedicated drift mode. When activated, this switches the car from its standard all-wheel-drive setup to rear-wheel drive only, allowing the rear axle to step out in a controlled way. It is the sort of function associated with track driving or closed-road use, and buyers who want to use it in that way will need to do so responsibly and in an appropriate setting.

BMW has also revised the chassis technology on the new 3 Series more broadly, suggesting the M350 xDrive sits atop a platform that has been meaningfully updated rather than carried over unchanged. The car remains in prototype testing at this stage, and BMW has not yet confirmed a launch date or official UK pricing.
