Volkswagen ID.3 GTI becomes the most powerful GTI ever made

Volkswagen has confirmed that the facelifted ID.3 GTI is the most powerful car ever to carry the GTI badge, delivering 322 horsepower through a rear-wheel-drive setup that no GTI has used before. According to multiple reports, the model arrives as part of a refreshed ID.3 lineup and represents a significant step away from the front-wheel-drive formula that has defined GTI models for decades.

The GTI name is not entirely new to the electric ID family. The outgoing ID.3 GTX produced the same 322 hp figure, but Volkswagen has repositioned that powertrain under the GTI badge as the range is updated. The shift in naming reflects how Volkswagen intends to align its electric performance cars with the broader GTI identity that drivers already associate with its Golf-based hot hatches.

Visually, the car takes design cues from the ID. Polo GTI, giving it a more recognisable link to the wider GTI family in the showroom. Alongside the styling changes, Volkswagen has introduced a dedicated GTI driving mode, which according to multiple reports is intended to sharpen throttle response and handling characteristics to suit the performance-focused badge.

The car is expected to go on sale in 2026, and while full UK pricing has not yet been confirmed, buyers considering it should bear in mind that electric vehicles at this performance level typically carry a significant premium over standard variants. Running costs differ from a petrol hot hatch too, with no clutch, no cambelt and no exhaust system to maintain, though tyres on a rear-wheel-drive car with this much power may wear more quickly than on a conventional front-wheel-drive GTI.
