Peugeot E-T16 concept reinvents iconic 205 eighties rally car
Peugeot has revealed the E-T16, an electric concept car drawing heavily on the legendary 205 T16 Group B rally machine from the 1980s.
Peugeot has unveiled a dramatic electric concept called the E-T16, taking clear inspiration from the 205 T16, the mid-engined Group B rally car that became one of the most celebrated competition machines of the 1980s. The concept is not a production model, but it offers a strong signal of where the French brand's ambitions lie.
According to multiple reports, the E-T16 is fitted with three electric motors producing a combined 816 horsepower, a figure that puts it firmly in the category of extreme performance machinery. The styling is described as outrageous, with design cues that deliberately echo the wide-bodied, aerodynamically loaded look of the original 205 T16 rally car that competed in the World Rally Championship during the Group B era.
The concept has been labelled a hyperhatch in some quarters, and if Peugeot were ever to commit it to production, it would place the brand in direct competition with Renault, which has its own high-performance electric hatchback ambitions. No production decision has been announced, and the E-T16 remains a concept at this stage.
For everyday drivers, the E-T16 is significant as a statement of intent from a mainstream European manufacturer that electric powertrains can deliver genuine performance excitement, not just economy. Whether or not this particular car ever reaches the road, it reflects a broader industry direction in which the gap between concept-show theatre and production reality is gradually narrowing.
